          XCR 11 Wrap Up

MPAC has had a great winter season of road and cross country running. Proof of this is the following list of results:

National Cross Country Championships 20 August 2011

Well done to our junior Victorian representatives who took part in the National Cross Country Championships this year.  We proudly fielded 7 runners who were able to achieve the following results:

          Under 12 over a distance of 3Km
          16  Joel McGill  11:16

          Under 14 over a distance of 3Km
          20 Broden Bird 10:26
          27 Kalen Bird 10:35
          33 Max Westle 10:40

          Under 16 over a distance of 4Km
          12 Troy McGill 12:49.8
          13 Zac Rouse 12:50.8
          67 Jordan Rouse 14:23.2

Well done to all of you.  You did us all proud.  Jordan had some bad luck and picked up a pretty nasty cold just before the event.  Jordan, great effort on your part to front up and still run a good time by any standard.

We as a club congratulate all of you on your achievements and wish you every success in your future running endeavours.

Below is a link to the AV coverage of the event.

          Oxfam Trailrunner 3 April 2011

After hearing of the great efforts of younger club members I thought I should point out that at least a couple of the older people in the club have been out there training and competing.

On Friday 1 April, Brett Stickland and me competed in the Oxfam Trailwalker 100km teams event.  This is NOT a relay, the whole team must complete the whole 100km (actually about 103km) together and check in and out of checkpoints together.

716 teams of 4 do the Melbourne event and with about 3000 participants it's the biggest ultra-run in the country.

While it's primarily a fundraiser, the front end has been getting more competitive and faster over the years.  We (Yelttum Maet) were pleased to set a new Australian record of 10;23. (toot own horn here)  Brett found a team to join in on the internet.  Results below.  Rohan Day was in "Yelttum Maet" team 463. 10hrs:23mins. Started out of the second wave. 8;30am start.

          Overall 1 /716
          Male 1 /173
          Family & Friends 1 / 362

          Fastest team Yelttum Maet

Brett Stickland was in "Long Way There" (team 704) 14hrs43mins. Started out of the first wave. 7am start.

          Overall 19 /716
          Male 10 /173
          Family & Friends 6 / 362

Both teams finished complete which is the tricky thing to accomplish over that distance and with people feeling good/bad at different times.  It adds a whole different dimension to running than the usual individualistic approach.  Rumour has it that there'll be even more competition next year, with Brett wanting to run on a faster team.  Good luck with finding some folks who can hack stepping up to the real deal... ;-)  Click Here to Rohan's team coming into the finnish.

          Junior State Representation - 27 March 2011

Well what a terrific long weekend at the Australian Youth Athletics Championships, Sydney Olympic Park!

It’s great to see that the whole precinct and the Athletics venue is being really well utilised and maintained since the Olympics. I had the pleasure of Staying in the precinct and going for various runs to explore the surrounding, unfortunately I’ll have to concede Sydney has Melbourne well and Truly covered in this area.
It really is a world class venue and added to the experience for our juniors in giving them a great feel for competition at the highest Athletics level available to juniors in this country.

Team Vic excelled, in particular our 10 Club members who made the team and competed all did themselves very proud.

Special mention must go to our medalists, as it is no mean feat making the Victorian team against stringent criteria, let alone being top 3 in the country!

Great effort and character was shown by Lachlan Freestone to get Bronze in the Hammer throw, and excellent top 5 results in the discus and shotput, whilst still battling an ankle injury sustained during training 2 weeks prior to the Nationals which left him barely able to walk.

Another terrific performance by Zac Rouse to smash his 3k PB by 18 seconds in winning the 3k to take the National title! Zac was headed in the last lap only to come back at the 300m to take the lead again, then hold a very determined challenger all the way down the straight. It really was an inspiring performance and full of terrific fighting spirit.

Also, to Troy McGill, who made a very brave move in the 3k with 1k to go and got a good 20-30 metres in front of the field. A margin which he held until the last bend, then just got collared by 3 other athletes in the home straight.
Troy ran a big PB in the process, combined with a 5th in the 1500m. I’m sure next year I’ll be talking about a national medalist when I mention Troy’s name.

And to all of the other Athletes, there were some terrific performances, and once again many PB’s were run.
Testament to the level at which they performed is that ALL of MPAC’s 10 state representatives achieved top 12 National performances.
When you consider they were competing against the best all states have to offer this really is a fantastic achievement, of which they can all be individually proud.

In addition to the results, I am extremely proud of the way all of our athletes conducted themselves over the weekend. Win, lose or draw, all of the athletes conducted themselves in a professional manner and with dignity and great  sportsmanship.

Special Thanks to Sophie Brennan for all of her help, photos, and support over the weekend, as well as all of the Parents, families, and friends who shared in this fantastic experience.
Also, special thanks to my wife Donna, and my family who tolerate me spending time in coaching. A very satisfying and rewarding job when you get to be involved in experiences such as this!

          A Great Weekend for MPAC - 8 November 2010

There were some stellar performances from a number of athletes over the weekend.

Cam Hall won the Arthurs Seat Challange.  This is a hill climb up Mornington Peninsula's Arthurs Seat.  It attracts large numbers and some pretty decent athletes to boot.  None as strong as Cam though who won the 6.7km climb in a time of  27min23sec.  Click here to view a local press release.

Six MPAC junior athletes qualifiied for the Victorian Schools team at the Vic All Schools Track and Field Champs over the weekend.  Click here for a full list of MPAC results.  Well done to all who participated.

Division 2 Spot is Safe and Champion Athletes to Boot - 5 September 2010

It was a wind swept, cold day at Lake Wendouree, Ballarat on the 19 June 2010.    Only 3 Open Male MPAC athletes turned up, not enough for a team and therefore no points could be gathered from the meet.  The Div 2 team slipped into relegation territory as a result with little hope of getting out of it.

Since then, with the assistance of front runner Cam Hall and consistent efforts from Rohan Day, Mike Wheatley and the rest of the team, the team has had sufficient numbers and momentum to finish mid way in Div 2 at most of the AV XCR events.  We got the much needed boost from our favoured event, the longer Burnley Half Marathon where with the boost of Tim Wallace back in the team, the team pulled off third place, securing 11 points and putting us an unassailable 15 points clear of relegation.  It was good to have finished ahead of Frankston who were 5th .  A big thanks to all involved, runners and organisers alike who made it possible for the team to defend its Div 2 spot.

A high light from the 2010 AV winter season (XCR10) was the great consistent performance from Troy McGill, Mike Wheatley and Sue Clark who took out their respective age group Championships. Troy Male U14, Mike Male 45-50 and Sue Female 45-50   The key to such an achievement is consistency.  I commend Troy, Mike and Sue for their consistent performances at each of the AV meets over the winter season.  They've done really well and I for one would like to congratulate them.  Well Done.  Click here for a picture of Mike and Troy with their trophies.

There's one event to go this season, the Tan Relays (not a favourite event at MPAC since each runner only runs 3.8 km, it takes double that for most MPAC runners to warm up) but we'll be there.  We all look forward to next winter and building on the work done in 2010.
